I've been acting like a bear...

Hi Reader ~

In the Seneca tradition, September is the month of Big Bear.

I learned that recently, and suddenly a lot of things made sense. The urge to stock up on supplies. To trim the bushes back. To clean out drawers and closets. That isn't restlessness. That's bear.

Bears know what September is for: gathering what will carry you through, letting go of what won't, and settling in for the deeper work ahead.

Not a bad way to live, when you think about it.

For me, the deeper work is writing. September is always the month I finish some things and begin others.

What I've finished

The Visible and The Invisible book is done — all five stories I've been sharing with you this year, together in one book. Five women. Five gifts that look impossible from the outside, and turn out to be closer than most of us have been told.

If you're in the mood to step outside the worldview for a while — to consider that perception can stretch further than you thought, maybe even in your own hands — these stories are for you.

It's on pre-order now, at the pre-order price, and it arrives October 1.

📚 This Week's Featured Book

All five stories. One book. October 1.

Seeing what others can't see: The Visible and The Invisible gathers all five visionary stories into one complete book — and the pre-order price is the lowest it will ever be.

👉 And through the end of the month, Goodreads is giving away one hundred copies. You could be one of them: Check It Out!

The First Ruby is finished too — the holiday prequel to the Ruby Sisters Series, coming November 1. More about that next month. For now I'll only say: if you've ever wondered how the sisters began, this book will answer that question.

What I've started

A new book in The Shift Series.

I thought I was done writing that series. Apparently the series had other ideas. I'll tell you more as it grows — but if you've taken Roots To Promise with me these last few years, here's your hint: that's the name of the book.

And you?

What's the bear in you doing this month? Gathering, finishing, letting go, beginning? Hit reply and tell me. I read every one, and I'd love to know what you're preparing for.

Follow Me Here — free on Amazon through September 24th

Follow Me Here is free on Amazon through September 24th. It's one of my own favorites — I think it's time I read it again. Hopeful, small-town, about friendship and second chances, and about what happens when a woman finally follows the thread of her own life. If you love those kinds of books, I think you'll love this one.

🌿 FROM MY GARDEN

Fall flowers! Black snakeroot - Coneflower or Echinacea - Begonia

Two amazing things I found in our garden and woods. A monarch butterfly caterpillar on our milkweed that I finally managed to grow. And in the woods, something special since they have been disappearing... an Indian Pipe or Ghost Pipe.

✨ Something To Inspire

THIS WEEK'S QUOTE: The books or the music in which we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. These things — the beauty, the memory of our own past — are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshipers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never visited. -CS Lewis

Until next time—be well and magnify good. ✨

With love,

Mr Bluebird

Hi Reader ~ Almost every year, something happens that makes me happy and puzzles me at the same time. If you know the answer, I’d love to hear it. A bluebird couple tries to get into the house. The male leads the way. And no, it isn’t that he sees his reflection. I know because he tries every window, and I’ve gone outside and looked in. There’s no reflection. What I see is the room. And I know that’s what he sees too, because he, and sometimes she, sees me looking back. We have one of those...

Shift Your Story

Listen to this one On the way to yoga one morning, I passed a man walking down the street proudly displaying his political affiliation. It was not mine. For a split second, I judged him. And then I judged myself for judging him. A few blocks later, I stopped judging us both and did what I always do. I thought about perception. Yes, my favorite topic. Because whether we notice it or not, perception rules. The question I couldn’t answer Somewhere between the corner and the studio door, a...

The Visible and The Invisible

Hi Reader ~ A little over a year ago I sat down to write one short story. A daughter, a rainy crosswalk, a father who wasn't supposed to be there. I thought that was all it was. One story, done in a week, on to the next thing. It wasn't done. Maya wouldn't leave. And then Helen showed up, and Alice, and the sisters in Not In Time, and finally Calla with her impossible maps. Five women who see what the rest of us can't, each of them sure at first that what they see is a burden. Each of them...
