I picked the raccoon card this year...

Hi Reader ~

Here we are in September. Back to school!

Oh wait. That was years ago, wasn't it?

Still, no matter how many Septembers go by, some part of me always thinks it's time to sharpen the pencils and start something new. Do you feel that too?

My garden has moved into harvest mode. Only a few tomatoes are left clinging to the vine, but it was a bumper crop this year, and they were delicious. If you're ever hunting for really good salsa tomatoes, try Pink Delicious. They weren't actually pink—but they were huge, and wonderful.

We also managed to eat a few ears of corn before the three young raccoons in our yard claimed the rest. Del said I should have seen it coming, since I picked the raccoon card for myself this year.

Persistence. Cleverness. Dedication. That's what raccoons carry—so I suppose if they're going to take my corn, I'll take those qualities right back from them.

My writing is in the harvest zone too.

I just finished gathering all five Visible and Invisible stories into a single book. It comes out October 1st—and if you preorder, you can get it for less. And I've finished the holiday short-story prequel to The Ruby Sisters, ready for November. More on that next month.

This is Labor Day weekend here in the States, so by the time you read this, we'll probably be working our way through all the goodies Del's family brings to the party, with s'mores around the campfire to follow.

However you spend your weekend, I hope it's restful and full of joy—with plenty of good eating and even better reading.

One more thing: Second Sight is free on Amazon for just a few days. You'll find the link below. Perfect for a little end-of-summer reading.

🌿 FROM MY GARDEN

Check out the log bridge in the background of the Rose of Sharon picture. And that's me coming up the stairs from the bridge. Del built the bridge and the stairs a few summers ago. What a job that was!

And a few flower pictures too ...

Second Sight — free on Amazon through Wednesday

Second Sight is the fifth and newest of the Visible and Invisible stories. Calla makes maps for a living — real ones, of watersheds and ridgelines. But her truest maps are the ones she draws with her eyes closed, and when a seven-year-old girl goes missing on a cold October night, her carefully hidden gift becomes the only map that matters.

✨ Something To Inspire

THIS WEEK"S QUOTE

The fundamental idea of good is thus; that it consists in preserving life, in favoring it, in wanting to bring it to its highest value; and evil consists in destroying life, doing it injury, hindering its development. -Albert Schweitzer

Until next time—be well and magnify good. ✨

With love,

Mr Bluebird

Hi Reader ~ Almost every year, something happens that makes me happy and puzzles me at the same time. If you know the answer, I’d love to hear it. A bluebird couple tries to get into the house. The male leads the way. And no, it isn’t that he sees his reflection. I know because he tries every window, and I’ve gone outside and looked in. There’s no reflection. What I see is the room. And I know that’s what he sees too, because he, and sometimes she, sees me looking back. We have one of those...

Shift Your Story

Listen to this one On the way to yoga one morning, I passed a man walking down the street proudly displaying his political affiliation. It was not mine. For a split second, I judged him. And then I judged myself for judging him. A few blocks later, I stopped judging us both and did what I always do. I thought about perception. Yes, my favorite topic. Because whether we notice it or not, perception rules. The question I couldn’t answer Somewhere between the corner and the studio door, a...

The Visible and The Invisible

Hi Reader ~ A little over a year ago I sat down to write one short story. A daughter, a rainy crosswalk, a father who wasn't supposed to be there. I thought that was all it was. One story, done in a week, on to the next thing. It wasn't done. Maya wouldn't leave. And then Helen showed up, and Alice, and the sisters in Not In Time, and finally Calla with her impossible maps. Five women who see what the rest of us can't, each of them sure at first that what they see is a burden. Each of them...
